The A’DAM tower is a newly constructed building and it is the tallest building in Amsterdam. A’DAM is short for Amsterdam, and it is located in the cities Noord borough right next to our hostel ClinkNOORD. Still under construction it will feature office space and on top there is an observation deck, a bar and restaurant and lounge. In the bar/lounge space, there is an ode to all of the EDM DJs from the city of Amsterdam like Tiesto, Martin Garrix, Armin Van Buuren, Fedde Le Grand and Afrojack who are the worlds most famous DJs. The whole tower is EDM themed from the music played to the rave-like laser show in the elevator ride up showing the immense influence the electronic dance music scene had on the city’s culture and economy.
The lounge featured a cool feature where you could move a tablet around the skyline and choose a decade going all the way back to the 16th century and it would show you what that part of the Amsterdam skyline would have looked like. In contrast to the 21st century city skyline which featured newly planted sky scrapers to the very south and new glass high-rise residential building on the north end of Amsterdam’s centrum borough to the Noord borough.
The very top included a newly implemented swing which only opened 2 weeks before we got there, and it was deemed the tallest swing in Europe. It was both a terrifying experience where you were propelled forward over the edge of the skyscraper, as well as an incredible experience as we were treated to a panoramic view of Amsterdam’s historic Centrum borough as well as The IJ. It was very educational and allowed me to understand the layout of the city and to put context to the spatial distribution of certain landmarks as well as the expanse of The IJ which serves as a protector for the entire City of Amsterdam.
